French is spoken not only in France but in many other parts of the world, including French territories in the Pacific close to Australia. It is also a second language in many countries.
Learning a second language enhances literacy skills in English and broader cultural understanding and tolerance.
Students taking this course will learn to speak French using language appropriate, for example, to the tourist in France and to understand French as spoken by native speakers on topics of everyday relevance.
They will also learn to read French for information and interest and to write simple French such as might be used in personal letters. The study of modern France and everyday life in France are also important aspects of the course. The syllabus stresses the need for the integration of language and civilisation.
